Short answer
Short answer
Review Medicare coverage every fall even if you are satisfied today. Confirm that doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, and prescriptions remain covered next year; read the Annual Notice of Change; compare total costs rather than premiums alone; and check how any Medicare Advantage change will coordinate with TRICARE For Life or VA care.
Who this applies to
- Veterans with Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage
- TFL and CHAMPVA beneficiaries
- Spouses and caregivers helping with an annual review
Important exceptions
- TFL itself does not have an annual enrollment requirement, but Medicare and private-plan choices can still change.
- Do not cancel coverage until replacement eligibility and effective dates are confirmed.
- Medigap replacement rights can be limited; get state-specific advice before dropping a policy.
Your yearly review file
- Current Medicare card and plan card
- Annual Notice of Change and Evidence of Coverage
- Current medication list with dosage and pharmacy
- Doctor, specialist, hospital, and durable-equipment provider list
- VA and TRICARE pharmacy information
- Travel or seasonal-residence plans
- Bills or claim problems from the past year
Coverage questions
- Will every current provider remain in network next year?
- Will every prescription remain on the formulary and at the same tier?
- Are prior authorization or step-therapy rules changing?
- Are premium, deductible, copay, or maximum-out-of-pocket amounts changing?
- Will dental, vision, hearing, transportation, or fitness benefits change?
- Will the plan still coordinate acceptably with TFL, CHAMPVA, or VA care?
TRICARE and VA questions
- Has DEERS contact information changed?
- Are you using a TRICARE network, non-network, or Medicare provider?
- Are VA prescriptions still the best fit for each medication?
- Did any VA community-care authorization expire?
- Will overseas travel change which payer is primary?
Before making a change
- Compare the full year’s expected cost, not only the monthly premium.
- Call doctors directly to confirm network participation.
- Check exact drug names and dosages in the plan tool.
- Ask how claims reach TFL or CHAMPVA.
- Save confirmation numbers and the effective date of any enrollment.
- Review the final choice with every affected household member.
Frequently asked questions
When is Medicare Open Enrollment?
Medicare Open Enrollment generally runs October 15 through December 7 for coverage beginning January 1. Other election periods may apply in specific situations.
Does TFL need to be renewed every year?
TFL does not have a separate annual enrollment, but you must remain eligible and keep required Medicare coverage. Review related plan choices and DEERS information.
Should I compare plans if my doctors have not changed?
Yes. Networks, formularies, costs, and benefits can change even when your own care has stayed the same.
